O365 Weekly Digest - 08/19/2019

Every week I'll be posting a quick summary of O365 updates included in the admin weekly digest email that you can sign up for via the admin Message Center: https://admin.microsoft.com/AdminPortal/Home#/MessageCenter - these emails include items posted to the message center over the last week and come out every Monday.

Updates:

  • Outlook for Windows is getting a Dark Mode (Roadmap ID: 49924)
  • Outlook for Windows is getting suggested calendar locations (Roadmap ID: 20974)
  • Teams and Skype interop for screen sharing and VOIP (Roadmap ID: 53934)
  • Comments non-Office files is coming to SharePoint and OneDrive (Roadmap ID: 16617)
  • SharePoint is getting new and updated webparts for page authoring: 
    • Button & Call to Action : The Button web part and Call to action web parts make it easier to engage with your audience (Roadmap ID: 53221)
    • World clock & Weather updates: It is now easier to add locations to the clock and weather webparts (Roadmap ID: 53222)
    • News gets hero tiles as a layout: Tiles layout is coming to the News webpart.(Roadmap ID: 53228)
    • Hero gets second call to action link for large tiles: Larger tiles in the Hero zone will now have the option for 2 links instead of just one
    • Highlighted content with custom query filtering: You can now filter the highlighted content webpart with KQL or CAML (Roadmap ID: 53229)

    Admin Updates:

    • Threat Explorer is getting the ability to preview headers and download emails (Roadmap ID: 52595)
    • Improve submission of suspicious email to Microsoft and updated quarantine file previewer (Roadmap ID: 52255)
    • Files On-Demand will be enabled by default for MacOS Mojave (Roadmap ID: 44736)
    • Reminder: Intune on iOS is dropping support for versions less than 8.1.1

    Updated Feature: Mac Files On-Demand Enabled By Default
    For current OneDrive users on macOS Mojave, we’re enabling Files On-Demand by default. We'll begin rolling this change out soon.This message is associated with Office 365 Roadmap ID 44736. If you don’t use Macs in your environment, you can disregard this message.

    New Feature: Office 365 admin submissions and improved Quarantine file previewer
    We will soon make it easier for security teams and admins to report suspicious email messages or content to Microsoft and get feedback. This enhancement is related to Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 52255 .This update does not apply to Office 365 subscriptions in GCC.

    New Feature: Dark Mode and suggested calendar locations in Outlook for Windows
    Microsoft Outlook for Windows will soon release full support for the Black Office Theme with dark mode in the reading and compose windows and introduce suggestions for meeting and event locations in Calendar.This message is associated with Microsoft 365Roadmap ID 49924 for the black theme toggle andRoadmap ID 20974 for suggested locations. This update does not apply to Office 365 subscriptions in GCC.

    New Feature: Microsoft Teams - Screen sharing in Teams/Skype for Business interop

    Reminder: Support for version 8.1.1 and higher of Intune App SDK for iOS
    We shared in MC181538 that starting in September 2019, Intune will move to support iOS apps with Intune App SDK 8.1.1 and higher. Apps built with SDK versions less than 8.1.1 will no longer be supported. This change will go into effect with Apple’s release of iOS 13 which is expected to come around September and also been announced in MC181399.

    Comments on non-Office Files in SharePoint Online or OneDrive for business is a new Office 365 feature. We'll begin rolling this feature out soon.This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 16617

    Quick Look at the Surface Duo Android Emulator

    Microsoft recently released their SDK and Emulator for developing dual screen applications for the Surface Duo ( https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dual-screen/introduction ) and being a bit curious about what the experience was going to be on a dual screen device I decided to give download it and give it a try.  First Impressions First and foremost there is the novelty of having two apps launched side by side. The Duo emulator is using Android Version 10 and to be API version 29, both are the latest versions of Android. There is no Play Store or Microsoft Store on the emulator, which is to be expected as its main purpose is app development.
