O365 Weekly Digest - 10/28/2019

Every week I'll be posting a quick summary of O365 updates included in the admin weekly digest email that you can sign up for via the admin Message Center: https://admin.microsoft.com/AdminPortal/Home#/MessageCenter - these emails include items posted to the message center over the last week and come out every Monday.

Updates:

  • Outlook Mobile will now show you your next calendar events from your inbox (Roadmap IDs: 54546 & 54578)
  • Teams is getting cross-channel posting (Roadmap ID: 52393)
  • Additional Time saving updates are coming to the Outlook mobile apps
  • Outlook on the web is getting automatic sensitivity labeling (Roadmap ID: 56649)
  • Outlook on the web is also getting the capability to instantly RSVP to meetings right from the message. (Roadmap ID: 56796)
  • Outlook mobile is getting Microsoft Information Protection Labels and the ability to read and create digitally signed and encrypted messages (Roadmap IDs: 32648326493256932370)

Admin Updates:

  • Self-Service purchase capabilities for Power Platform. This means a business unit can go and purchase advanced skus for PowerBI, Flow or PowerApps: 
  • The rollout for Yammer to use the Office Profile will begin at the start of the year (Roadmap ID: 53554)
  • Teams per license category is being retired starting November 22nd
  • Yammer is removing system messages from the All Company community, to monitor Yammer groups it is recommended to utilize the O365 Admin Center
  • O365 Admin Portal is combining, Services & add-ins, Security & Privacy, and the Organization Profile pages into a new services page. (Roadmap ID: 56352)
  • Outlook mobile is getting native Microsoft Information Protection labels in GA  (Roadmap IDs: 32648 & 32649)
  • Outlook Mobile users can create and read digitally sign and encrypt email messages (Roadmap IDs: 32569 & 32370)
  • Teams is getting an activity based teams renewal feature so that teams that are actively being used will automatically be renewed. 
  • SharePoint Site URL rename is rolling out throughout October (Roadmap ID: 54125)

New Feature: Outlook mobile lets you know what’s Up Next
We're rolling out a new feature for Outlook mobile that brings information from your calendar directly to the top of your inbox.We'll be gradually rolling out Outlook for iOS to customers in late October 2019.These updates will roll out to customers on a per-tenant basis, as all users will get updated concurrently.This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap IDs 54546 and 54578.

Announcing self-service purchase capabilities for Power Platform products

We are pleased to announce that the feature originally announced in MC185508, Teams channel cross-posting, is now launching.We are gradually rolling out this feature, beginning October 23, 2019.The roll out will be completed worldwide by the end of October.This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 52393.

We're rolling out Automatic sensitivity labeling for Outlook on the web soon.We’ll be gradually rolling this out to Targeted Release customers in early November 2019.The roll out will be completed worldwide by the end of December 2019.This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 56649

New Feature: Time-saving updates for Outlook mobile help you be better prepared
We recently launched calendar updates to Outlook for iOS and Android to help manage meetings and get you to your events on time. We are now rolling out additional capabilities to help you be better prepared for meetings while on the go.We'll begin rolling out Meeting Insights and time zone support in early November.These updates are associated with the following Microsoft 365 Roadmap IDs: 54450, 54545, 54733, 56327.

New Feature: RSVP instantly in Outlook on the web
You will soon be able to RSVP directly in the message list in Outlook on the web. We'll be gradually rolling this out to Targeted Release customers in late October 2019.The rollout will be completed worldwide by the end of the year.This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 56796.

Updated Feature: Yammer uses your Office profile

Updated October 22, 2019: We have updated the post to reflect the new roll out timeline and provide additional details. We’re updating how Yammer uses Office profiles. User profiles in Yammer will now use the Office profile rather than the standalone Yammer profile. This message is associated with Office 365 Roadmap ID 53554. We'll be gradually rolling this out to customers in early January 2020, and the roll out will be completed worldwide by the end of March.

Retiring ability to disable Microsoft Teams per license category in Microsoft Teams Services
Major Update: Announcement started
To align Microsoft Teams with other workloads, we will be retiring the ability to disable Microsoft Teams for all users of a particular license category.Note: Edu Faculty and Edu Student license categories are excluded from this change.We'll be gradually rolling this out to customers starting November 22, 2019, and the roll out will be completed by the mid-December.

Yammer removing system messages from All Company community
Major Update: Announcement started
As a part of the tighter integration with Office 365 and in an effort to reduce noise in the All Company Yammer community, we will no longer be posting the All Company system messages for new group creation and new user joins beginning December 20, 2019.Instead we recommend the utilization of the Office 365 Admin center to monitor group and user creation.

New Feature: Outlook mobile is rolling out Microsoft Information Protection sensitivity labeling for GA
Outlook for iOS and Android is starting to roll out native support for Microsoft Information Protection sensitivity labeling and protection.This is a follow up to first quarter CY2019 Message Center post MC173526.This enhancement is related to Microsoft 365 Roadmap IDs 32648 and 32649.

New Feature: Outlook mobile rolls out support for S/MIME for general availability
We are rolling out the ability for Android customers to digitally sign and encrypt email messages, as well as read encrypted and signed messages, in Outlook for Android.We'll begin rolling this out to commercial tenants on October 21, 2019.The rollout will be completed worldwide in the coming weeks. New Feature: Activity Based Teams Renewal
We are pleased to announce the launch of Activity Based Teams Renewal for Teams close to expiration. The current Expiration policy allows you to set an expiration time frame for selected or all Teams. After the defined Team lifetime, owners are notified to renew the Team. With this newly added intelligence, Teams which are being actively used will be automatically renewed. This preempts the need for any manual action on the part of the Team owners. We’re making it possible for SharePoint administrators to change site URLs.We'll be gradually rolling this out to customers in mid-October.The roll out will be completed worldwide by the end of October.This roll out does not apply to Office 365 subscriptions for EDU tenants.This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 56205.

The Behind the Scenes Scope of SharePoint News

I recently had someone ask if there was any way to disable the ability to send a SharePoint news article to an external party and after some clarification it became apparently that even with external sharing completely disabled in the tenant you can, in fact, send a preview of the article to any email address. After some research it became apparent that there is no ability to turn off this functionality which caused some concern of potential data leakage. For reference we are talking about the SharePoint news article 'Send to' functionality shown below.  While a credential is needed to access the full article, any email sent will include an article preview. The article preview doesn't show anything too worrisome as it is just the title, the first few lines of text, and an image but one area that caught my eye was the ability to add in the optional message. After some testing it does not appear that there is any length limit to the text that can be put in the summary, it got
