O365 Weekly Digest - 10/14/2019

Every week I'll be posting a quick summary of O365 updates included in the admin weekly digest email that you can sign up for via the admin Message Center: https://admin.microsoft.com/AdminPortal/Home#/MessageCenter - these emails include items posted to the message center over the last week and come out every Monday.

Updates:

  • Outlook on the web is updating task handling to be better integrated with O365 (Roadmap ID: 56509)
  • SharePoint online is getting a new way to easily customize native list/library forms by showing/hiding columns as well as the ordering (Roadmap ID: 56425)
  • Live caption is coming to Teams Meetings (Roadmap ID: 52817)

Admin Updates:

  • Message Center messages will now be displayed in local time instead of UTC
  • Compromised Account playbook is coming to Automated Incident Response (AIR) (Roadmap ID: 55742)
  • PSTN Minute Pools report give insight into audio conferencing and calling activities by minute 
  • SharePoint Online email notifications are moving to a tenant specific email address such as no-reply@contoso.onmicrosoft.com (Roadmap ID: 56361)
  • Windows 7 end of support for ProPlus is coming Jan 14th 2020
  • Yammer is changing their data retention options from hard and soft delete to Delete and Archive respectively

New Feature: Changing timestamps in message posts from UTC to Local Time
Updated October 11, 2019 - To ensure we provide the best experience we are updating the roll out timeline for this feature. We apologize for the inconveince. We will soon be changing timestamps in message posts in the new Office 365 admin portal.We'll be rolling this out to all customers on October 17, 2019 (previously October 8, 2019).

Updated Feature: Automated Incident Response update (Public Preview)
We’re adding an additional Compromised account playbook that Automated Investigation and Response (AIR) will auto-investigate. This is an extension of features available when AIR became generally available.We'll be gradually rolling this out to customers that have Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) Plan 2 in early October 2019.The rollout will be completed worldwide for those customers by the end of October.This message is associated with Office 365 Roadmap ID 55742.

Updated Feature: Outlook on the web - changes in Tasks
We’re updating Tasks in Outlook on the web to better reflect our commitment to the integration between Office 365 products.We'll be gradually rolling this out worldwide in late October 2019.The rollout will be completed worldwide by December 2019.These updates are associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 56509.

New Feature: Form customization in SharePoint lists and libraries
We are making it easier to customize the visibility and ordering of fields in SharePoint list and library forms.We are gradually this out to Targeted Release customers in late October 2019.The rollout will be completed worldwide by early November.This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 56425.

New Feature: PSTN Minute Pools report
PSTN Minute Pools report gives you an overview of audio conferencing and calling activity in your organization by showing you the number of minutes consumed during the current month. You can see a breakdown of activity including the license used for calls, total minutes available, used minutes, and license usage by location.We are gradually this out for all users in mid-October 2019.The rollout will be completed worldwide by the end of October.

Windows 7 End of Support and Office 365 ProPlus

Updated Feature: Upcoming Changes to Yammer Data Retention Options

Customer feedback has indicated that the documentation and policies around Yammer Data Retention can be easily misunderstood. To resolve this, we will be releasing a change to the Yammer Data Retention settings on November 4th.\

The Behind the Scenes Scope of SharePoint News

I recently had someone ask if there was any way to disable the ability to send a SharePoint news article to an external party and after some clarification it became apparently that even with external sharing completely disabled in the tenant you can, in fact, send a preview of the article to any email address. After some research it became apparent that there is no ability to turn off this functionality which caused some concern of potential data leakage. For reference we are talking about the SharePoint news article 'Send to' functionality shown below.  While a credential is needed to access the full article, any email sent will include an article preview. The article preview doesn't show anything too worrisome as it is just the title, the first few lines of text, and an image but one area that caught my eye was the ability to add in the optional message. After some testing it does not appear that there is any length limit to the text that can be put in the summary, it got
